Canon does not support a responsibility for the scanner driver, but may have decided to Vista. This is not a "mistake" that will make a business decision. The scanner may have been a model or are obsolete and do not want money to spend for a dead product.

You can blame the companies concerned. Canon could have created a new Vista drivers for your hardware, or Microsoft, could not contain a native driver update. In general, however, your hardware manufacturer to provide an updated driver, but there is nothing that says you have to do this for you.
